Bridget Tempest is a mapmaker akin to those composing maps of the Americas in the 17th century: she inscribes land and journey with mystery, narrative, form and formulation that makes us into travellers marvelling at – and forced to think about – the world in its many guises. Oh, and she’s also an alchemist. |
We were impressed by the technical accomplishment of this print, and in particular its fine drawing. The work references an English landscape tradition whilst also engaging with a very particular landscape as a contemporary printmaker to create a work in which there is a sense of personal connection. The use of sepia ink is a factor in its success, as the colour generates a kind of subtle tonal field over the entire surface of the plate/image, one that generates a particular atmospheric quality. We felt that the artist was engaging in the fundamentals of mark-making within her chosen medium, questing to and the right kind of drawing for each element of the work. Every mark, including the smallest and most delicate, was considered with great sensitivity. |
Using a variety of printmaking techniques, Bridget Tempest enables the viewer to enter an elusive and interior world. The rendering of growth and form is drawn with meticulous accuracy, as each print suggests her intimate knowledge of both the natural world and reference to archetypal imagination. The scale invites the viewer to both focus in and pull away from the surface. As colour 'field' and symbolic references merge, they are poetic, fleeting works with material presence. |
