The Den First Prize, The Bradford Open 2013
Judge's comments We were impressed by the technical accomplishment of this print, and in particular its fine drawing. The work references an English landscape tradition whilst also engaging with a very particular landscape as a contemporary printmaker to create a work in which there is a sense of personal connection. The use of sepia ink is a factor in its success, as the colour generates a kind of subtle tonal field over the entire surface of the plate/image, one that generates a particular atmospheric quality. We felt that the artist was engaging in the fundamentals of mark-making within her chosen medium, questing to and the right kind of drawing for each element of the work. Every mark, including the smallest and most delicate, was considered with great sensitivity.
